(Feb 23) – The solidarity of the region of Trentino arrives the United Nations, at the Glass Palace in New York. From February 27th to March 9th will be held the 56th session of the “Commission on the Status of Women” (CSW ), ECOSOC functional commission (Economic and Social Council of the United Nations) that deals with gender equality and women’s empowerment. The event is sponsored by “Fondazione opera campana dei caduti di Rovereto”, the autonomous Province of Trento and “Centro per la formazione della solidarietà internazionale” of Trento, and it will see the region of Trentino as main protagonist on March 6th at the Glass Palace, from 2pm to 4pm. “A unique opportunity – said Alberto Robol, leader of the foundation – to speak to a wide audience of NGOs from around the world and to representatives of UN member states, a chance to present the ‘model of Trentino’ in the field of international solidarity. An occasion that we hope will be presented again, considering all the good things done by our region, particularly in Africa”. “We are very happy to participate the work of the Economic and Social Council, because we believe in the importance of linking international solidarity”, so said Lia Giovanazzi Beltrami, Provincial Councilor to Solidarity and Coexistence. A delegation from Italy – composed by the Minister of Labour, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities, Elsa Fornero, and the CGIL General Secretary, Susanna Camusso – will attend the CSW meeting. WHAT IS ECOSOC?
The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is the United Nations principal organ to coordinate economic, social, and related work of the 14 UN specialized agencies, functional commissions and five regional commissions. The functions and powers of the Economic and Social Council are stipulated in Article 62 of the Charter of the United Nations: “The Economic and Social Council may make or initiate studies and reports with respect to international economic, social, cultural, educational, health, and related matters and may make recommendations with respect to any such matters to the General Assembly to the Members of the United Nations, and to the specialized agencies concerned”. ECOSOC has 54 member Governments which are elected for three-year terms by the General Assembly. Seats on the Council are allotted based on geographical representation with fourteen allocated to African States, eleven to Asian States, six to Eastern European States, ten to Latin American and Caribbean States, and thirteen to Western European and other States.
