(May 8) “I’ve been living in London for ten years. England is my base but I travel a lot, I often go to China where is the HQ of my employer.” Simone Provvedi left Italy when he was 30. After graduating in Electronic Engineering in Pisa, he decided to go abroad learning English, and in London he found a great opportunity. Born in La Spezia, Provvedi worked for Nokia and Ericsson: “In 2002,” he explains “Nokia was the number one company in the mobile market. I worked there for seven years and a half years, until January 2010. I was a software programmer to develop the radio protocols for 3G phones, then I worked for mobile telephones standard.” “I’m currently working for a Chinese phone company called Huawei,” continues to Italian engineer “ It makes both mobile phones and networks. I work for them as consultant: I created a company of my own, which is called Provvedi Ltd, and I develop telephones standard. I often participate in meetings (3GPP) and confront myself with the most important companies in the world: the aim is to establish global standards for mobile telephony.” “I’ve always been fine abroad, particularly in England – says Provvedi – because there are opportunities to prove you worth and build a solid career. Considering the Italian economic crisis, emigration is a concrete alternative that young people should keep in mind. I would recommend to anyone a foreign experience.” Provvedi thinks he won’t leave England shortly but doesn’t exclude to return to Italy someday: “Too bad in Italy there are no real opportunities, particularly in an area like mine, – he concludes – because Italian academic training is superior to all others.” (Gil/Red)
