(Jul. 12) – A new recognition for the research work about autonomous navigation and guidance done by the VisLab group from the University of Parma. The Royal Geographical Society in London has in fact awarded Alberto Broggi, Vislab Director, at the annual meeting of the Royal Institute of Navigation. Every year the Royal Institute of Navigation, directed by Peter Chapman-Andrews, select persons who have distinguished themselves in the field of navigation. The reasons for the award are the many successes achieved by the Professor and his research group VisLab in recent years: “For the important results in the development of perception systems that combine processing and interpretation of images, artificial intelligence, navigation and guidance.” Among the projects completed by the group there is the VIAC test for automatic guided vehicles (www.viac.vislab.it): four electric vehicles with no driver have performed a 13,000 kilometers trip from Parma to Shanghai in 2010, facing real driving situations. This test – also noted by Google – is the largest ever made in autonomous navigation. Since 15 years ago, the VisLab laboratory of the University of Parma has been involved in basic and applied research developing machine vision algorithms and intelligent systems for the automotive field.
