(Sept. 26) – It has been launched the new Trenitalia rail link between the port of Trieste and the logistics hub in Bettembourg, Luxembourg, railway ring of a multimodal link between Asia and Central Europe. The new service, which will manage and direct the flow of goods from Turkey to the port of Trieste (and the other way round), has been jointly undertaken by Trenitalia and the Luxembourg Railways (CFL), through its subsidiaries CFL Multimodal and Eco Logistics Operator (ELO), in collaboration with TX Logistik (FS Group) and Alpe Adria. The semi-trailers “Mega” from Turkey to the port of Trieste are loaded on the trains and converge in the center of Bettembourg, managed by CFL Multimodal, and then are redirected to various destinations in Luxembourg, Belgium, Netherlands, United Kingdom, France and Germany. And the same will happen from Turkey toward Trieste. The frequency of the service (3 pairs of trains, round trip) can carry more than 100 units per week, but the development plan has the objective to reach a capacity of more than 300 units per week in early 2013, ie about 15 thousand trailers for years. From origin to destination, each trailer will cover more than 2,500 kilometers and for the first year more than 10 thousand trailers will be removed from the road, thus contributing not only to decongest the road network but also to reduce the greenhouse gas pollution.
