Nov. 21 – Land becomes a work of art when creativity meets passion.
This gives rise to sophisticated projects, all to be admired from afar. On Nov. 30, one of these works will be inaugurated at the Nirox Foundation in Johannesburg, South Africa. This is a work of permanent land art by Valerio Berruti, under the name “Over the rainbow”. On the evening of the presentation, a video named “Udaka” will be screened over the Nirox Sculpture Park lake. Valerio Berruti, last year, was one of the artists in residence at the prestigious Nirox Foundation.
Here the artist decided to carry out an ambitious site-specific project: draw the face of a little girl on an entire hill: a work of land art so large it can be seen via Google Earth. A delicate and non-invasive action to the environment, Berruti’s art is a metaphor that expresses hope for the future in a land torn apart by history. To complete ”Over the rainbow,” the artist only used flowers and the surrounding vegetation combined with over a hundred tons of painted stones. Udaka – meaning mud in Zulu – is an animated video composed of 350 paper drawings made using the earth from Foundation Nirox. After the inauguration, the video will be projected over a lake in harmony with the surrounding nature. The animation and drawings that together make up a large installation of 13 jute frescoes will be showcased at the SMAC Art Gallery in Stellenbosch (from December 6 to January 19).
The whole project “In Infinity I see you” is organized by Martina Venturi.
