Jan. 17 – The Estorick Collection of Modern Art in London in 2013 celebrates its 15th anniversary. To observe this special occasion, the museum opened the exhibition “Lines of Poetry,” on until April 7 and dedicated to Giorgio Morandi. The exhibition presents eighty works on paper, etchings and watercolors retracing the artist’s entire career in Bologna. Morandi was a painter and engraver; he was one of the protagonists of Italian 20th century painting; and he is considered today among the greatest engravers in the world. Organized in collaboration with the Galleria d’Arte Maggiore of Bologna, as well as with works from private collections and from the Estorick Collection, the show is one of the most complete retrospective of Morandi’s art graphics ever organized in the United Kingdom. In fact, it includes drawings that exemplify the artist’s skills in distilling the essence of a complex scene or composition in an arrangement of almost abstract forms. The exhibition is accompanied by Polaroid pictures, reworked with digital prints by esteemed photographer Nino Migliori (1926). Created during the mid-Eighties, the photographs are part of the series entitled “Imagined Landscapes: The Places of Morandi” and explore the landscape of Grizzana, immortalized in many of the artist’s works, and renamed “Grizzana Morandi” in his honor in 1985.
