Apr. 19 – Italy receives top honors in the global race for the best photo taken inside a physics laboratory, the “Global Particle Physics Photowalk.” Two Italian amateur photographers, Nino Bruno and Joseph Paul Boccio, prevailed upon other competitors in the jury choice and the popular online vote, respectively. They won thanks to two images taken in the laboratories of the INFN, the National Institute of Nuclear Physics: the Gran Sasso and Frascati. The first 39 selected photographs of the Photowalk can now be seen at: www.flickr.com/photos/interactions_photos/collections. The photo competition was held last September, when hundreds of amateur and professional photographers had the rare opportunity to explore and photograph accelerators and particle detectors in physics laboratories around the world. Nino Bruno, a building contractor in L’Aquila, said to be a novice in the world of photography: “It was extremely exciting and challenging.” Joseph Paul Boccio, a student of Natural Sciences in Rome, commented on the experience: “The Photowalk was truly amazing and gave me the opportunity to live, in a single moment, the two main passions in my life: science and photography. ” Photowalk was organized in collaboration with InterAction, composed of particle physics laboratories in Asia, North America and Europe.
