July 26 – Russia has finally accepted the registration of the original as Parmigiano Reggiano DOC on the whole territory of the Federation. This is great news for made in Italy exports. “Now Parmigiano Reggiano will finally be fully protected in the territory of the Russian Federation, which is in the interests of both Italian producers and Russian consumers,” exults Riccardo Deserti, director of the Parmigiano Reggiano Consortium. “Now the Consortium may take steps to prevent the misuse of the origin designation for ‘Parmigiano Reggiano’ according to the provided framework of protection. The law extends to a series of products often labeled by counterfeiters as “Parmigiano Reggiano” to sell more: you cannot use a geographical name linked to the Parmigiano-Reggiano area (eg, Parma, Reggio Emilia), as well as translations. This allows you to intervene if the original term is written in the Russian Cyrillic alphabet, including also cases in which the use of similar names misleads consumers about the place of origin and the special properties of the product.”
