Sept. 10 – The streets of California, where every year there are important historic motoring events, became the walkway to the 32th commemoration of the Mille Miglia. For what is internationally recognized as “the most beautiful race in the world,” the location choice is important. Pebble Beach is the home of the famous Concours d’Elegance, the “Concours Italian,” and “The Quail.” Laguna Seca hosts regular track competitions, such as the “Monterey Historic Racing.” The choice demonstrates the international popularity of the Brescia race and the friendship that binds it to the American motor racing fans. During the “Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance” two trophies with the Red Arrow were awarded to two cars. This year, there were two special awards named after the Mille Miglia, one for pre-war cars and another for the post-war period. Since 2006, in addition to the prize awarded to the owners of the winning cars, the winners’ names are stamped on another trophy with the Red Arrow that remains permanently at Pebble Beach. The 2013 winners were two specimens of exceptional value: the prewar prize went to a 2900 Alfa Romeo B Type “P3” owned by Carlo Pintacuda, who won the Mille Miglia in 1935. Originally, the car, now owned by the Gregory Whitten collector, was a single-seater. Enzo Ferrari, who at the time managed the Alfa Romeo racing, turned it into a two-seater to make it participate in the Mille Miglia. The cabin was so narrow that as co-pilot Baron Della Stufa was chosen for his petite physique. The trophy for the post-war period has been assigned to the Ferrari 212 Berlinetta Vignale owned by Jon Shirley. The car took part in the Mille Miglia of 1951 and 1952, driven respectively by Franco Cornacchia and Guido Mariani.
