Jan. 7 – After Hong Kong, one of Italy’s national treasures is proving very successful in Macau. “The Birth of Venus” by Botticelli, from the Savoy Gallery in Turin, is on display for the first time in the small Asian region. Since last Dec. 20 and on display until February 16, the painting is part of the exhibition “The Life and Times of a Goddess.” The collection, housed by the MGM Art Space, groups paintings by the Florentine artist – including the famous 1482 work – who portrayed the sea-born goddess. An iconic image of Renaissance artistic accomplishment, the “Venus” by Botticelli is a painting executed in tempera on panel exemplifying the style and humanistic values that characterize the Renaissance period. Botticelli depicted the nude goddess as a symbol of love, beauty, fertility and prosperity, a goddess who embodies the ideal art form.
