Jan. 23 – The New York Philharmonic will inaugurate its forthcoming theatrical season with the great Italian soundtracks with “La Dolce Vita: the music of italian cinema,” a concert-event created by the Sugar Group that will take the stage on Sept. 16 for the opening gala night of the Orchestra. The following night, the group will perform live once again, for the cameras of Wnet and PBS. Sugar Group selected, in cooperation with the New York Philharmonic, the most representative soundtracks of Italy’s greatest films. The event is thus unique in its kind, a sincere tribute to Italy’s excellence in the field: great composers, like Nino Rota, Ennio Morricone, and Luis Enríquez Bacalov; Oscar-winning suites, such as 8 ½, La Dolce Vita and Amarcord by Federico Fellini; and pieces from Nuovo Cinema Paradiso by Giuseppe Tornatore, in William Ross’ reintrepration are just some of the tracks performed. Alan Gilbert will direct the two events at the Avery Fisher Hall in New York; while talented musicians will join in: the violinist Joshua Bell; singer, composer and actor Josh Groban; and the soprano Renée Fleming. “So many wonderful pieces are written for movies, and the New York Philharmonic will perform them live, in the hope of giving the audience a wonderful experience – says Gilbert – When music meets cinema, there is an even greater emotional and dramatic range to be explored. This is why I am particularly happy to be part of this project.”
