Apr. 1 – Luigi Pirandello is the genius behind “Il fu Mattia Pascal”, “Uno, Nessuno e Centomila”, “Sei personaggi in cerca d’autore”, “Il berretto a sonagli”, and “Cosi è se vi pare.” These are just some of the many works written by the Sicilian writer, iconic figure of Italian literature. Pirandello was a writer and poet. But theater was his passion and most successful field, which he revolutionized. This is why the Italian Institute of Culture in Dublin – in collaboration with the Region of Sicily, the Sicily World Society for Pirandello Studies, the University College of Cork and the Sicilian History of Entertainment Institute – organized a conference on “Pirandello, the family and the era” for Tuesday, April 8 at 6:30pm. The conference will see the attendance of the Italian Ambassador to Ireland, Giovanni Adorni Braccesi, the president of Sicilia Mondo, Domenico Azzia, and the Vice President, Marcella Azzia . The “Society for Pirandello Studies” will be presented by Professor John C. Barnes, former head of the Department of Italian Studies at University College Dublin and current President of the Society. Sarah Zappulla Muscarà and Enzo Zappulla, alongside coordinator Daragh O’Connell, also university lecturer and researcher at the Department of Italian Studies at University College Cork will animate the debate. Sarah Zappulla Muscarà, Professor of Italian Literature at the University of Catania, is the author of outstanding contributions to Sicilian literature, drama and cinema between the 19th and 20th centuries. She has also edited the unpublished texts and correspondence. Her contributions on Pirandello focused on new aspects of his work and biography. She collected in a single set “All Theatre in dialect” for Bompiani and, with Enzo Zappulla, “All the theater by Stefano Pirandello,” for Bompiani, which brings together for the first time the entire drama production – all 19 texts – of Pirandello’s first son, who was Luigi Pirandello’s secretary and assistant.
