May 15 – “When a man with a pistol meets a man with a gun, the one with the pistol is a dead man!” This is the famous phrase spoken by Ramon Rojo Joe, or Gian Maria Volonté, to Clint Eastwood half a century ago in “A Fistful of Dollars.” The film debuted Sergio Leone’s “Dollar Trilogy,” later completed with “For a Few Dollars More ” (1965 ) and “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” (1966). But 1964 is the year “spaghetti westerns” were born. And this year, the Cannes Film Festival will pay homage to this peculiar anniversary. The film will be screened on Saturday May24, after the awards ceremony, using the restored copy of the Bologna Cinematheque. The film will be presented by Quentin Tarantino. The American director never hid his admiration for Sergio Leone films, even saying (on the occasion of a survey conducted among different directors in 2002 by the magazine “Sight and Sound”) that “The Good, the bad and the Ugly” is his favorite historical film.
