(Jul. 2nd) A successful story in the field of research comes from Pisa. It stars a young researcher from Cagliari: Paolo Pintus. Born in 1983, a bachelor’s degree with honors from the University of his city (and thanks to which he received the Meucci-Marconi Award), Pintus is now a fellow researcher of the Tecip Institute of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa. His research interests are related to the field of integrated optics, silicon photonics and numerical method in electromagnetism. And these studies allowed Pintus to win the award organized by the “Angelo Marcello Anile” and the” European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry” (ECMI), for the outstanding doctoral thesis entitled “Design of silicon-based integrated optical devices using the finite element method. This award was established in 2010 and is open to young researchers from European universities authors of a thesis on topics related to Mathematics applied to industry and is assigned on a proposal from an international commission. The 2014 ward went to Paolo Pintus, “a young and talented researcher who has demonstrated the ability to combine the study of sophisticated mathematical principles with the challenges presented by the industry and by the opportunity to bring together these two worlds.”
