(Oct. 9) With 725,000 AIRE members, Argentina is the top destination of Italian emigration. Germany, Switzerland, France, Brazil, UK, Canada and Australia follow, as state the Rapporto Italiani nel Mondo 2014 by Fondazione Migrantes, presented last Tuesday in Rome. Argentina is thus the first country of residence for all Italians: a strong link between Italy and Argentina that has deep roots. The emigration to the Americas was huge in the second half of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th. The countries where most Italian immigrants made their way was the United States, Brazil and, of course, Argentina. But who are they, what do they do and what did they do in Argentina? This will be discussed tomorrow at Bahia Blanca during the conference “L’integrazione degli italiani a Bahia Blanca.” The meeting is scheduled at 7.30 pm at the conference hall of the Società Italiana di Mutuo Soccorso. History Professor Silvia Vietri will be speaker at the event, describing life, work, everyday life of the first Italians arrived in Bahia Blanca at the beginning of the past century, during the mass emigration.
