Geneva – Italy’s Fabiola Gianotti has been named new Director General of CERN in Geneva. This is the first time a woman has chosen to head of the European Organization for Nuclear Research. Born in Rome, Gianotti is 52 years old, studied in Milan and led Atlas, one of the experiments that led to the discovery in 2012 of the Higgs boson, a particle that helps physicists explain the existence of mass. “A great victory for Italian science”, commented Minister of Education Stefania Gianotti. “I’m sure she will carry on an excellent job”.
