Amsterdam – Yesterday, the University of Amsterdam presented “The first Italian-Dutch Dictionary 1672-2014”, in an event sponsored by the Italian Embassy in The Hague. Curated and edited by Vincenzo Lo Cascio, a professor emeritus of Italian Linguistics at the University of Amsterdam, in collaboration with Dr. Elisabeth Nijpels, The work, written in both languages, was presented and commented on by Tullio De Mauro. The book is the result of Professor Lo Cascio’s research on the Italiaansche Spraakkonst, the first Italian grammar in Dutch, published in 1672 and discovered by him in 1967. The book also contains extracts from memoirs of famous Italians related in some way to the Italiaansche Spraakkonst, who traveled in those years to the Netherlands: a letter from 1676 by Opizio Pallavicini to Cardinal Altieri, the travel journal of 1667-68 and 1669 by Cosimo de ‘Medici (later Grand Duke Cosimo III of Tuscany), and the travelogue of brothers Guido and Giulio Bovio in 1677-78.
