Singapore – Metastases are the major cause of death from cancer, and now an interdisciplinary study by IFOM and the University of Milan proves that the ability of tumor cells to metastasize and spread is more common in cells that migrate together, in a sort of “flock”, rather than individually. By using advanced imaging, bioinformatics and applied mathematics, the research highlighted the tendency of malignant cells in our immune systems to form aggregates that move in similar ways to those of flocks of birds or schools of fish. The research, conducted in collaboration with the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, the University of Toulouse, the National University of Singapore and A * STAR in Singapore, was published in the international journal Current Biology.
