Brussels – The European Commission approved a new entry in the European register of protected geographical indications against imitations and fakes, the ‘Pecorino delle Balze Volterrane.’ Also called Pecorino Pisano, this cheese has a characteristic crust covered with ash, and is produced from sheep’s milk in the province of Pisa, near Volterra, in the clay areas between the Cecina Valley and the Era Valley. The Pecorino delle Balze Volterrane joins some other 1,200 EU-protected PDO and PGI products, a category in which Italy leads. (9Colonne)
