Feb. 23 – During the night “Birdman” triumphed, Italy also has its reasons to celebrate: Milena Canonero won the Oscar for Best Costume Design for her work in “The Grand Budapest Hotel.” The Wes Anderson film was inspired by the works of Stefan Zweig. The costume designer from Turin is now a regular at the Academy Awards, receiving her fourth Oscar (of nine total nominations). Her first success came in 1976 with Stanley Kubrick’s “Barry Lyndon,” followed in 1982 by “Chariots of Fire” by Hugh Hudson, and in 2007 with “Marie Antoinette” by Sofia Coppola. “E quattro! Congratulazioni a Milena Canonero, eleganza, grazia e talento italiano agli Oscar” tweeted Prime Minister Matteo Renzi celebrating Italy’s success. Milena Canonero thanks the Academy and Wes Anderson: “You’re like a conductor, a composer, a source of inspiration.”
