Mar. 4 – Assistive robotics can play a vital role in improving the quality of life of the elderly. And researchers at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa are well aware of this fact. The project “Ramcip” (short for “Robotic Assistant for MCI Patients at home), funded by the European Union as part of the Horizon 2020 progra, takes its first steps. Italy is thus at the forefront of the technology that is developing intelligent butler able to provide discreet home assistance, safe and proactive (from food preparation to the management of the house, all the way to cognitive and physical exercises) for the elderly, suffering from what is called “mild cognitive impairment.” The goal is to improve their quality of life and increase their level of autonomy. The research project, which lasts three years, is funded with €4 million. Of these, over €330.000 have been allocated to Italy, represented by the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa. Innovative robotic systems for service personnel has scientists from across Europe working together. The Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa is involved with its TECIP Institute, acronym for Technologies for Communication, Information, and Perception. The project’s coordination ” is entrusted to the Institute for Information Technology of the Greek Research and Technology Center; the project consortium includes the Technische Universität München (Gemany), the Foundation for Research and Technology of Greece, the Medical University of Lublin (Poland), the Ace Foundation (Spain), as well as two Polish and English small-medium enterprises and, of course, the same Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa.
