Guadalajara – Bernardo Bertolucci, along with director Guillermo del Toro, actress Victoria Abril and sound engineer Martín Hernández (recently nominated for an Oscar for “Birdman”), are guests of the International Festival of Guadalajara, which will open next Friday in the Mexican city. In this moment of success for Mexican filmmakers in the US, who for two consecutive years won the Oscar, it’s time to look at Mexico’s domestic industry. With 126 films produced in 2013, a record year, Mexico’s cinema industry seems to have turned back time to 1959. Italy is this year’s guest of honor, paying tribute to Bertolucci, who opens the festival with a screening of “You and I”. Fifty Italian films will be screened, while several restaurants in Guadalajara will serve traditional dishes from Italy cited in the book “100 recipes of Italian cinema” by Laura Delli Colli.
