Panama City – The project for the expansion of the Panama Canal reached a milestone with the installation of the gate on the Atlantic side. To witness the important event, President Juan Carlos Varela welcomed in Panama City the top management of the Salini Impreglio Group, in charge of delivering the locks for the Canal: CEO Pietro Salini; Group General Manager Finance and Corporate, Massimo Ferrari; and General International Operations Manager Claudio Lautizi. The installation of the lock gates is a complex operation that consists in “parking” these huge constructions of about 4.000 tons each through sliding carriages with very little room for maneuver. The project involves the construction of a new channel which, complementing the existing one, will allow the transit of larger ships, increasing commercial traffic in response to developments and the continued expansion of the shipping transport market.
