Doha – The Italian Minister of Justice Andrea Orlando is in Doha, Qatar, to participate in the plenary of the 13th UN Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Congress, which opened two days ago in the presence of the Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon and heads of state and ministers from around the world. This morning, Orlando inaugurated the new Italian Embassy in Doha, along with Ambassador Guido De Sanctis. Yesterday, he spoke at the Rule of Law, Human Rights and the Post 2015 Development Agenda Panel. While in a speech at the plenary session, he focused on the challenges posed by organized crime, terrorism and corruption, and the need for judicial cooperation between Member States as part of the global agenda for development. On Sunday, the Minister also met the Attorney General of the State of Qatar, Ali bin Fetais al-Marri with whom he signed a memorandum of understanding on legal and judicial cooperation. The UN Congress is also an opportunity for Italy to reiterate the importance of the threats posed by human smuggling and emerging crimes, with their problematic aspects in terms of legal aid, and to underline the continued commitment of the Italian government for the protection and promotion of human rights, including its worldwide effort to ban the death penalty.
