Apr. 22 – The Italian Cultural Institute of Marseille celebrates World Book Day, which is tomorrow, today, by inaugurating a unique exhibition for vastness and preciousness of the collection presented. The show, designed and produced by Roberta Alberotanza, director of the IIC, displays a thousand and more books to celebrate the culinary tradition of Italy and other 56 countries. Food was chosen to stay in line with the theme of Expo Milano 2015 “Feeding the planet. Energy for Life.” “A thousand and more books on the history of our food and the world”, which will be hosted at the Institute until June 30, and is sponsored by UNESCO. “The set – reads the presentation statement by the Italian Cultural Institute – consists of more than a thousand volumes grouped into six sections: Italian regional cuisine, international cuisine, the history of cuisine, antique books, wine and, finally, themed cuisine. This last group, which consists of 335 volumes, compares food with paintings, science, literature and, of course, well-being.” A hundred books form the history section, taking the visitor in a journey through time: from Roman times to the Middle Ages, from the banquets of the Renaissance to modern food and the opportunity to learn, in detail, the culinary habits of different populations. The exhibition will include some rare and precious volumes, as the 1911 edition of ” La scienza nella cucina e l’arte del mangiare bene ” by Pellegrino Artusi and “The Physiology of Taste” by Brillat-Savarin, a real philosophical reflection on French cuisine.
