June 11 – For PhotoEspaña 2015, from June 12 to September 11 the Italian Cultural Institute of Madrid hosts “Mirada interior”, an exhibition by Italian photographer Valerio Bispuri. Looking back to the late 1990s until today, the exhibition traces some of the most important work of Bispuri’s career, with special attention to Latin America, an America the artist lived, breathed and investigated in a journalistic and socio-anthropological approach, giving back, through his images, the complexity of an entire continent without stumbling into stereotypes and prejudices and without claiming to be exhaustive. His reportage grasp the dynamics and events related both to everyday life in the Brazilian Amazon, in Cuba in the shadow of Che Guevara, and in the intimate vibrations of homosexual love, that of Bethany, a young Argentine woman. This intimacy emerges in relation to faith, in scenes from an India that lives the largest spiritual gathering of the world. The author, always driven by the desire to enclose in each shot a complex universe of human experiences and emotions, also tells the story of a country, that of the Philippines, in the aftermath of one of the most powerful typhoons in history. His visual storytelling, both in color and black and white, leads us to discover the identity of migrant peoples, of different origin and generations: from the authentic life of the Gypsies in camps in Italy and Bosnia to that of the emigrants in Campania; passing by the young refugees that reach the shores of Sicily and the Italians from Calabria who chose to live in Buenos Aires. The exhibition explores the “different”, complicated, often made of violence, attentive to the prisons and to the outskirts of South America world depicted by the artist, where young people are left to drugs, but where there is always a will to vindicate humanity through glances and gestures.
