7 July, 2015 – “Will the mafia kill us too? – Don’t worry, we’re in winter now, and the mafia kills only in the summer.” A young Arturo asks his father before going to sleep. A few years later, in 1992, Arturo is now 20, and works as a pianist on a local TV channel. His life will be marked by the Mafia killings and his great love for Flora. This is the plot of “The Mafia kills only in the summer,” a comedy directed by and starring Pierfrancesco Diliberto, aka “Pif”. The film won over the critics and public (grossing in total €4.662.000), with Senate President and former National Anti-Mafia Prosecutor Pietro Grasso calling it the best film work on Sicilian Mafia ever made. The film made its debut in Italian cinemas in November 2013 as a dramatic comedy (also starring Cristiana Capotondi and Claudio Gioè) that through the childhood memories of the main character reconstructs, in often paradoxical and ironic tones, the bloody killing season of Cosa Nostra’s criminal activities in Palermo in the 1980s and 1990s. And now, the Italian Cultural Institute in Vienna announced that the film will be screened within the “Kino am Dach” festival, tomorrow – Wednesday, July 8 at 9pm – at Hauptbücherei (Urban Loritz Platz 2a, 1070), Vienna’s central library. “Before this movie, no one recognized me…Now I’m a male version of Belen: everyone recognizes me, and stops me in the streets,” Pif joked last year at the Giffoni Experience, on the success of his debut in film. “I feared the reaction of the Palermo people, because at the beginning of the film we’re not exactly saints – continued the Sicilian actor and director – but then we show our pride.” (Red)
