20 July, 2015 – Eni has made a major gas discovery in the exploration prospect Nooros, located in Abu Madi West, in the Nile Delta, 120 kilometers north-east of Alexandria. Preliminary estimates indicate that the field could contain 15 billion cubic meters of gas. “The great discovery – reads a statement from the group – was made in the Nidoco NW 2 Dir exploratory well, drilled at a depth of 3,600 meters deep. At about 60 meters, the well encountered a net mineralized gas thickness in a sandstone Messinian sequence with good petrophysical properties, as well as subtle levels in the overlying Pliocene sequence.” The new field will be put into production in about two months thanks to its connection to the central gas processing in Abu Madi, located 25 kilometers south-east. “The new discovery – said the group – is part of Eni’s new strategy that aims to refocus on exploration high near-field value activities, or that facilitate rapid development of the discovery through existing infrastructure and synergies”. Eni, through its IEOC (International Egyptian Oil Company) Production BV subsidiary, holds the license to West Abu Madi with a share of 75%, together with its partner, BP (25%). Petrobel, a company owned by Ieoc (50%) and EGPC (50%), is the operator of the license. Eni has been present in Egypt since 1954, where it operates through Ieoc, and where it is the leading producer of hydrocarbons, with an equity production of 180,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
