22 July, 2015 – “I could have demystified the real historical situation, the relationship between Pilate and Herod, I could have demystified the figure of Christ mythologized by Romanticism, Catholicism and the Counter-reform movement. But then, how could I have demystified death? The problem that I can’t demystify is that so profoundly irrational, and thus somehow religious, that is the mystery of the world.” Explained Pier Paolo Pasolini about his 1964 film “Il Vangelo secondo Matteo,” which focuses on the life of Jesus as described in the Gospel according to Matthew. The work of the Italian director will be screened in Berlin, at Babylon cinema (Rosa-Luxemburg-Str. 30, Berlin-Mitte). The Italian Institute of Culture of the city is promoting the event under its own series of “CinemAperitivo,” an exhibition dedicated to those Italian movies that left a mark on the history of Italian cinema; after the screening, the audience has the opportunity to enjoy a typical Italian aperitif inside the cinema itself. The common denominator between movies is their plot: that of a past or present Italy. During the aperitif, the audience is invited to meet and exchange views. The appointment with the Pasolini’s film – a faithful reproduction of the Gospel according to Matthew from the Annunciation to the Resurrection of Jesus – is scheduled for Sunday, July 26 at 4pm, with Silvia Cresti as moderator.
