7 August, 2015 – Building Energy, an Italian company active in the production of energy from renewable sources in Italy and abroad, has been awarded the contract for the development of the Annapolis Solar Park. The 16.8 MW photovoltaic system will cover an area of over 32 hectares previously occupied by the landfill of Annapolis, Maryland, and will be the largest solar park built on a covered landfill in the US. Building Energy and ABM Government Services, a leader in solutions for infrastructure, have been developing the project in partnership with BQ Energy, a major player in the construction of renewable energy installations on landfills or contaminated sites. The Solar Park in Annapolis will come into operation by the end of 2016, and is worth an estimated $ 36 million. The total electricity produced by the photovoltaic system in 20 years will equal the reduction of annual emissions of greenhouse gases of 3,168 cars, or iCO2 emissions for the use of electricity in 2,070 homes for a year. This corresponds to 12,5% of the annual domestic energy consumption of Annapolis. The same energy could also compensate the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed in one year by 5,000 hectares of forest. “The construction of the solar plant in an area previously used as a landfill demonstrates the attention of Building Energy to protecting the environment” – said Fabrizio Zago, CEO of Building Energy – the Solar Park in Annapolis is a success: it’s the result of the work carried out by a company operating in the renewables sector. Our goal is to make Annapolis a benchmark for solar energy.”
