August 18, 2015 – A new technique invented by the INGV and CNR, can calculate, through satellite data and GPS, the manner in which deep magma emerges from the Campi Flegrei, creating millimeter deformations on the Earth’s surface. The research is relevant to understanding the phenomenon common to calderas in other parts of the world, such as Yellowstone in the US and Rabaul in Papua New Guinea. The study, which is part of the monitoring activities promoted by the National Department of Civil Protection and carried out within the European project MED-SUV (MEDiterraneanSUpersite Volcanoes), was published in Scientific Reports, and provides useful new monitoring system tools to tackle any future volcanic crisis.
