2 September, 2015 – The general public knows him as the “weatherman with a bowtie”, but he’s much more than that. Luca Mercalli is a climate scientist of international fame. Known to television audiences in Italy for the show “Che tempo che fa” by Fabio Fazio (where he was a permanent guest from 2003 to 2014) and for conducting, always on RAI-3, the show “Scala Mercalli,” Mercalli has held more than 1,400 conferences in Italy and abroad. Mercalli – born in Turin in 1966 – chairs the Italian Meteorological Society, has founded and directed the magazine “Nimbus”, coordinates the Meteorological Observatory of the Collegio Carlo Alberto in Moncalieri and was part of the Climate Broadcast Network of the European Union and the International Weather Forum in Paris. And now, as part of the lecture series “Landscapes, memories and nations” – scheduled for Monday, September 7 (at 6pm), Mercalli heads to the CM Lerici Italian Cultural Institute in Stockholm (organized in collaboration with KTH- Environmental Humanitie). The expert will hold a conference on “Climate, soil, landscape: how to stop the race to the precipice.” Mercalli is a researcher with extensive experience in Alpine climatology, glaciology and paleoclimatology, and has founded a site of glaciological research at the Ciardoney Glacier in the Gran Paradiso National Park, in which he operates since 1986. He has been a consultant to the European Union, a drafter of law on adaptation to climate change in mountainous regions (2012) and works for legislation against the unlawful exploitation of land.
