Vienna – The Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations in Vienna, Filippo Formica, was elected today by acclamation President of 59th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which opened today in the Austrian capital. Italy, after seven years since its last Presidency in 2008, returns to preside over the most important annual event of the Agency. The Conference is called upon to carry out the verification and monitoring plan of the implementation phase for the Iranian Nuclear Program Agreement, signed on July 14. The Italian Foreign Affairs Ministry expressed “satisfaction for the recognition of Italy’s role in the field of nuclear non-proliferation and the role played in the field of nuclear safety and applications of nuclear science and technology.” In order to share best practices developed by our country, on Wednesday at the sidelines of the conference, there will be an event dedicated to the experience of the International School of Nuclear Security in Trieste, now in its fifth edition.
