September 21st, 2015 – Bosnia and Herzegovina, summer 2011: the Italian photographer Matteo Di Giovanni is carrying out a project for his master’s degree in photojournalism from the University of Westminster in London. But a serious accident threatens his life as he slips into a coma. In October, he unexpectedly awakens and has since undergone several operations, including the transfemoral amputation of a leg. Despite many difficulties, Matteo decides to continue his life and his work. He wants to prove to everyone that new biotechnologies can change the outlook of a person with a disability. His medium is a photographic journey that takes him from Italy to the North Cape. His project – Reaching the Cape – is now on display at New Old Camera, the historic shop in the heart of Milan founded by Ryuichi Watanabe, for over thirty years a reference point of Italian photography for collectors, amateurs and professional photographers. The journey’s success, for now, depends on the outcome of the campaign on Kickstarter, open until September 30. “Photography is a powerful medium. And I want to share through photography this amazing story – explains Matteo – Going to the North Cape and coming back, by documenting everything, means proving that life goes on and that our passions give us the strength to never give up.” (Cle)
