Washington – A man between his thirties and fifties is the oldest fully sequenced genome of an individual found on the African continent. The DNA was extracted from a 4500-year-old skeleton, discovered in 2012 on the plateau of Gamo, in the south of Ethiopia, in a cave known as “Mota”. The study, published in the journal Science, saw the contribution of Mauro Coltorti and Pierluigi Pieruccini from Department of Physical Sciences, Earth and Environment at the University of Siena, who were among the protagonists of the discovery and excavation of the remains.
