Havana – “Un saludo para el pueblo de Cuba”, “a greeting to the Cuban people,” headlines the Cuban newspaper Granma as it reports on the official visit of the Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi in Cuba. This is the fourth and final leg of the Prime Minister’s institutional visits across Latin America, after Chile, Peru and Colombia. Renzi, who was welcomed at the José Martì International Airport by Vice-Chancellor Rogelio Sierra, is the first European head of state to visit Cuba after Pope Francis’ visit. On the island, Renzi will meet Raul Castro, as well as with representatives of the Cuban government. The goal of these meetings, as pointed out by the newspaper, is to “strengthen bilateral cooperation on cultural and scientific exchanges and above all strengthen the energy and tourism sectors.” The newspaper recalls that Cuba and Italy first entered into a diplomatic agreement in 1903.
