New York – The main threats to global security are at the center of the talks scheduled for today at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs between Minister Gentiloni and the Deputy Secretary of the United Nations and Executive Director of UNODC, Yury Fedotov. Minister Gentiloni stressed Italy’s appreciation and support for UNODC activities in every field: its engagement against Daesh and foreign fighters, the actions and programs undertaken within the framework of the Palermo Convention, its programs to combat drug trafficking and conversion of illicit crops, particularly in Afghanistan. UNODC counters terrorism and combats transnational organized crime, the smuggling of migrants and trafficking in drugs, and boosts international cooperation against trafficking in cultural goods. These areas are transnational in character, which “make international cooperation essential and strategic,” said Gentiloni. “The United Nations system, which Italy fully supports, is the multilateral framework of reference within which to develop such cooperation,” concluded the Minister.
