(9 March 2016) For the first time in history, an Arab country will have its own Garden of the Righteous. The country is Tunisia, and the Garden is hosted by the Italian Embassy in its capital. The news comes directly from the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Paolo Gentiloni, who recorded a video-message broadcast during the dedication ceremony for six new trees planted in the Milan Garden of the Righteous for International Women’s Day. “We thought of Tunisia because it is a symbolic and important country in the heart of the Mediterranean,” stressed Gentiloni. On the same day, the Italian Ambassador in Tunis Raimondo De Cardona, announced the initiative and met with Abdessatar Ben Moussa, President of the Tunisian League for Human Rights (Nobel Peace Prize 2015). The League will work with the Italian Embassy to identify persons deserving to be celebrated in the Garden: each of them will have a tree dedicated to their efforts. (Sip)
