(May 10 2016) In an effort to revitalise the role of women in the Sudanese press, the Italian Embassy to Khartoum has organised the workshop in recent days “Empowering Women in Sudanese Media” together with the local UNESCO representation and collaboration with the national Sudanese journalists and Italian Union Agency for Cooperation in Development. The aim of the workshop, attended by about 200 people was to focus the attention of Sudanese institutions, journalists, and the international community on the role of women as the drivers of development for the qualitative growth of the press and media in Sudan and as vehicles privileged to convey social messages in the country. “The cornerstone of the workshop theme has functionally combined two elements critical Sudan, gender equality and freedom of the press, in a broad discussion, allowing inclusive arguments on these elements and on what directions to move in the near future” states Ambassador to Khartoum Fabrizio Lobasso. The workshop also saw the examination of two case studies of Sudanese journalists in the eastern regions of Kassala, Gedaref and Port Sudan (Women and Media in East Sudan and Community Radio in the East Region): an element which allowed us to create a positive relationship with cooperation programmes of the EU managed by Italy in those regions.
