(May 10, 2016) From the myth of Europa to the migratory phenomenon. Roots, identity and culture. Thursday, April 14 at the Italian Cultural Institute in Valletta opened the International Conference titled “Malta in the Mediterranean civilisation: identity and identification, or the European Mediterraneanness”. The conference was conceived by Angelo Favaro from the Tor Vergata University in Rome and is sponsored by the European Union and organised by the Italian Cultural Institute, the Junior College of the University of Malta, The Tor Vergata University in Rome and by the International Cultural Association ‘Sinestesie’ Publishing and brought scholars from across Europe and beyond into the heart of the Mediterranean. The Italian Cultural Institute has communicated today: “Following the myth of Europa the conference was intended to change the space provided and try to think literally and literarily in opposite geographical terms to those which we are used to thinking about the European continent: from an already established euro-Mediterranean perspective, how can we go back to adopting a perspective of a European mediterraneity? To answer this question in the context of the conference, passed and contemporary issues about the Mediterranean’s cultural heritage have been discussed utilising a multidisciplinary and comparative methodology to deepen certain aspects of history, politics, philosophy, literature and the arts which promote intercultural dialogue and respect for cultural diversity in the Mediterranean”.
