(23 May 2016) Italy and the United States join forces to defeat brain cancer causing the brain to “starve.” Glioblastoma, the most common type of brain cancer, is in fact a very aggressive disease for which there are no effective therapeutic strategies. Researchers at the Sbarro Health Research Organization (SHRO, Biotechnology Center, Temple University, Philadelphia) and the University of l’Aquila have shown that the old drug, flavopiridol, created and used in the past as an anticancer agent for its ability to inhibit molecules which act as accelerators of cell proliferation, may have a new use for in the treatment of glioblastoma. Flavopiridol, in fact, would “starve” tumor cells by reducing the sugar they require to support tumor growth. The results were published in the scientific journal: Journal of Cellular Physiology.
