Philadelphia – Glioblastoma, the most common type of brain cancer, is a very aggressive disease for which there are no effective therapeutic strategies. Researchers at the Sbarro Health Research Organization (SHRO, Biotechnology Center, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA, USA) and the University of L’Aquila (Italy) have shown that the use of an old drug, flavopiridol, created and used in the past as anticancer agent for its ability to inhibit molecules which act as accelerators of cell proliferation, can find a new use for the treatment of glioblastoma. The flavopiridol, in fact, would be able to ‘starve’ the tumor cells by reducing their amount of sugar required to support tumor growth. (9Colonne)
