(15 July 2016) August 3 at the Italian Institute of Culture in Cairo is the presentation of the translated into Arabic of “Lettere contro la Guerra” (Letters Against the War) by Tiziano Terzani, by the translator Amanie Fawzi Habashi. September 11 and the outbreak of war in Afghanistan shook Terzani, who felt the need to be a witness, and set off as a freelancer, as he did early on in his career. He wrote a series of articles and reflections that are recollected in the book “Letters against the war”, published in February 2002 by Longanesi. A book of strong ethical commitment that animates the civil movements against conflict and violence. “Causes of war are within us more than they are outside us. Passions such as desire, fear, insecurity, greed, pride, vanity … Slowly we must get rid of them – writes Terzani, who died in 2004. We need to change our attitudes. We must begin to make decisions that affect us and others more on a moral basis than of interest. We need do what is right instead of what suits us. We need to educate children to be honest, not sly. It’s time to come out into the open; it’s time to commit to the values in which we believe. A civilization is strengthened by its moral determination much more than with new weapons “. (Red)
