Nairobi. Minister for the Environment, Gian Luca Galletti received Judi Wangalwa Wakhungu, Kenyan cabinet secretary for Environment, Water and Natural Resources. The focus of the meeting is the environmental cooperation between the two countries with a joint statement at the Paris Climate Conference, Cop21. They explored consolidated their partnership between Italy and Kenya with a memorandum of understanding. This would support Kenya’s transition to a low emission economy and the implementation of sustainable energy development, technical assistance and ‘capacity building’ for innovative projects, education and raising awareness of climate changes. Galletti reaffirmed Europe’s effort towards ending the killing of elephants and the illegal trade in ivory. He recalled the “Ivory Crush” initiative, the public destruction of ivory in Italy in Rome last March. This inspired Kenya to carry out a similar initiative soon after, burning 105 tonnes of elephant ivory. (9colonne)
