(August 9, 2016) If Italian athletes are doing so well in the Rio Olympics, it is also due to the consumption of ‘made in Italy’ food. For the first time in the Olympics, Italian athletes and guests of Casa Italia (Italy House) eat products supplied directly from Italian farmers. This is the result of an agreement called #riomangioitaliano. Coni (Italian National Olympic Committee) and Coldiretti (National Confederation of Farmers) permit products from more than 130 dairies and more than 4,000 breeders that make milk available, olive growers of Unaprol with extra virgin olive oil branded Fdai, Pomì tomato growers and Bonifiche Ferraresi, the largest agricultural company in Italy that brings rice, melons, and watermelons to Rio. #Riomangioitaliano is also an opportunity to fight against international food piracy. Fake ‘Made in Italy’ makes more than €60 billion euros per year, almost equal to the value of exports of original national products.
