(August 24, 2016) The Farnesina’s global network celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Giorgio Bassani. Among the upcoming events, the Italian Cultural Institute of Sydney is holding a conference chaired by Professor Anna Dolfi, an expert on the poet and prose writer from Ferrara on September 14 at 16:15 at the University of Sydney (School of Languages and Cultures). Professor Dolfi’s has worked for many years on the literature of melancholy, on Bassani’s literary paths that begin ‘after the death of the self’ and that qualify as a ‘beyond the heart’. In other words, that are guided by the necessity of being witnessed by a ‘chant of death’ that like in the collection of stories ‘Il Romanzo di Ferrara’ as in his poetry, goes beyond the limit of the unspeakable. If this idea is clear in his ‘Five Stories on Ferrara’, then it is in ‘Gli occhiali d’oro’ (The Gold-rimmed Spectacles) and ‘Il giardino dei Finzi-Contini’ (The Garden of the Finzi-Contini) that approach, through ‘Airone’, brings the author/poet to his narrative silence and to a new (diverse narration) poetic language, with which he becomes a guide and witness of a vanished world. Anna Dolfi is a teniored professor of modern and contemporary Italian literature at the University of Florence. She is a partner at the National Lincean Academy and is member of the National Committee for the Celebrations of the 100th anniversary of Giorgio Bassani’s birth.
