Geneva. A group of Swiss and Italian scientists working at the IRCCS Fatebenefratelli in Brescia identified pro-inflammatory microbes in the instestines that may be the cause of Alzheimer’s disease. At the center of the discovery are Amyloid and Tau, two proteins produced by the brain whose progressive accumulation in twenty years leads to neurological degeneration, with loss of memory and autonomy which are typical of the disease. Causes of accumulation of amyloid and tau in the brain and the inflammation origin, represent Giovanni Friosoni’s objectives of Giovanni Frisoni director of the Memory Clinic at University Hospital of Geneva and former Scientific Director of the IRCCS Fatebenefratelli in Brescia, and Annamaria Cattaneo from the Fatebenefratelli National Center for Research and Care of Alzheimer’s disease and psychiatric illness in Brescia: their studies were published in the journal Neurobiology of Aging.
