Baijkonur. PERSEUS experiment- PErsonal Radiation Shielding for Interplanetary Missions – for the development of an innovative wearable radiation protection system will be conducted on board the ISS International Space Station by ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli, as part of the third long-term VITA mission under the ASI-NASA for the ISS. The objective of the project funded by the Italian Space Agency – coordinated by Giorgio Baiocco Andrea Ottolenghi and the University of Pavia, which also involves companies Thales Alenia Space – Italy, SMAT – Società Metropolitana Acque Torino, AVIOTEC, ALTEC and the University of Rome Tor Vergata – is to create a prototype of a jacket that is suitable for the space environment, integrated with containers for drinking water available in the ISS. Once worn in full configuration, the thickness of the water in the PERSEUS jacket will ensure greater protection of radiosensitive organs against space radiation, in particular in case of solar particles.
