New Haven. A research study conducted by the “Marco Negri” IRCCS Pharmaceutical Research Institute in Milan was recently published in Yale University’s Journal of Neuroscience. The study was financed by AriSla – an Italian Research Foundation for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. The study was based on previous observations that highlighted an anomaly with the PPIA (Peptidylprolyl isomerase A) enzyme in ALS patients and has shown that its inhibition via drug, a derivative of cyclosporine, has had positive effects in an animal test subject. It protects motor neurons which are the cells that are primarily affected by the disease through the modulating of aberrant neuro-inflammatory responses. (9colonne)
