London. A study on the Campi Flegrei caldera coordinated by the Giovanni Chiodini of the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) in Bologna. The study was co-authored by Professor Alessandro Aiuppa from the Department of Earth and Ocena Sciences of the University of Palermo, and Antonio Paonita, Antonio Costa, Stefano Caliro, Prospero De Martino, Valerio Acocella, and Jean Vandemeulebrouck from the Bologna, Naples and Palermo INGV and Roma 3 and Savoie (France) Universities. The research is aimed towards understanding the process of reawakening of a dormant volcano and shedding light on the interpretation of volcano monitoring signals at the Campi Flegrei caldera. Italian and French scientists have identified for the first time a threshold beyond which rising magma under the Earth’s crust could trigger a critical state. (9colonne)
